Official: Google launches a new anti-spam algorithm against content farms

Back to our newsletter archive

Welcome to the latest issue of the Search Engine Facts newsletter.

Earlier this month, Google announced that they would release several new anti-spam algorithms this year. The first algorithm update has just been released and it deals with content farms. How does this affect your website and what do you have to change on your web pages?

Also in the news: some content farm providers claim to have arrangements with Google, local and mobile advertising becomes more important, Google deletes ads in Google Maps and more.

Earlier this month, Google announced that they will release several new anti-spam algorithms this year. The first algorithm update has just been released and it deals with content farms.

What are content farms?

There are two slightly different definitions of content farms:

  1. Content farms are scraper sites that aggregate the content from other sources to get high rankings for a variety of long tail keywords. These sites don't have unique content and they only aggregate the content from other websites to get clicks on their AdSense ads.

  2. Content farms are websites that produce low quality content in bulk. This content is often produced by workers from low-wage countries. The main purpose of these sites is to get high rankings for as many keywords as possible to get clicks on the AdSense ads that are displayed on the site.

Sites that copy the content from other websites often ranked higher than the original site in Google's previous algorithm. That's why Google released the algorithm update.

Google's Matt Cutts confirmed the new algorithm:

"[I mentioned] that 'we're evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others' content and sites with low levels of original content.'

That change was approved at our weekly quality launch meeting last Thursday and launched earlier this week."

Less than 0.5% of search queries have significantly different results

Matt Cutts also said that most surfers won't notice the change:

"This was a pretty targeted launch: slightly over 2% of queries change in some way, but less than half a percent of search results change enough that someone might really notice.

The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site's content."

The algorithm doesn't seem to be perfect yet

In an online discussion, many webmasters complained that their original sites have suffered while low quality sites still rank well:

"It doesn't matter if it is all 100% unique with tons of backlinks and really well laid out or simply an image. Everything got whacked.

Our out of date non unique ad filled sites are humming along FINE. So what's the message here Google? Write an in depth article that takes 3 days to complete and is linked to by hundreds of companies and gov agencies and loose all positions sitewide while our out of date halfbaked and useless content does fine?"

Should you change your web pages?

Google doesn't like spam. If you want to get lasting rankings on Google, you have to do three things:

Spammy SEO techniques often deliver quick results but they only work for a short time:

If you plan to build a lasting online business, focus on ethical search engine optimization methods. It takes longer to get high rankings with ethical SEO methods but your website will keep the high rankings for a much longer time:

The content farm algorithm update was only the first step. Google will release many more anti-spam algorithms this year. If you want to be successful with your website, you must make sure that you offer a useful site and that you offer Google the content that they want.

Google's John Mueller: what to do if your website has been downranked

In an online discussion, Google's John Mueller says what you can do if your website has been downranked after Google's latest algorithm update:

"One thing that is very important to our users (and algorithms) is high-quality, unique and compelling content. Looking through that site, I have a hard time finding content that is only available on the site itself.

If you do have such high-quality, unique and compelling content, I'd recommend separating it from the auto-generated rest of the site, and making sure that the auto-generated part is blocked from crawling and indexing, so that search engines can focus on what makes your site unique and valuable to users world-wide. "

DemandWhat are Demand Media's secret ?agreements? with Google?

"For those of you that haven't heard of the company they are a content farm using outsourced writers to produce 5000 articles per day on sites such as eHow and various other informational resources. [...]

Google declared war on 'content farms' last week but refused to comment on Demand Media specifically. [...] I certainly won't be buying shares in Demand Media anytime soon, unless they can let us have a look at that agreement with Google perhaps."

Google: local and mobile advertising becomes more important

"In Local, over 5 million businesses have claimed their Google place pages. [...]

Click-to-Call ads are generating millions of calls every month. A lot of advertisers are running these campaigns. I think one you can see if you tried is DirectTV. We did launch a call-only option where the only clickable link in the ad is actually a phone number, which not surprisingly substantially increases the click through rates on mobile devices."

Google Local Google drops real estate search listings

"In part due to low usage, the proliferation of excellent property-search tools on real estate websites, and the infrastructure challenge posed by the impending retirement of the Google Base API (used by listing providers to submit listings), we've decided to discontinue the real estate feature within Google Maps on February 10, 2011."

Google's Schmidt wants to set the record straight

"Eric Schmidt opens up about his company's executive shuffle, whether or not Facebook poses a threat, and where Google is competing with Apple. [...]

This has nothing to do with competitors. I publicly said the next 10 years will be as successful as the past 10. We're going to run this way for a while. It's a full-time job just to deal with."

"We now have several page 1 entries in Google, Bing and Yahoo!"

"We have been using IBP since launching our site. It has proved to be successful for us. We now have several page 1 entries in Google and Yahoo.

In fact we have the number one slot on Yahoo for one of our main key phrases. We found all of the software very useful, particularly the ranking tools, the optimizing section and the submission pages.

We started out looking at our competition and seeing the comparison to our site through the optimizer with the top 10 report. This was able to show how much we differed from the sites above us and offered recommendations to improve our position.

Once we put as much as we could into practice, the results started to come. Now we keep an eye on our positions in the search engines using the ranking checker. It enables you to see your improvements and any downward movements. We can recommend this software."

Which Link Metrics Should I Use? Part 2 of 2 - Whiteboard Friday

Howdy, SEOmoz fans! Welcome to another edition of Whiteboard Friday. Today the exciting conclusion, Part 2 of 2, on which link metrics to use. So, last week we discussed in depth a ton of the link metrics that are available, what they mean, what they do, how you can interpret them. Today I want to walk through some of the specific tasks and projects that you are going to be involved in when you are doing SEO kinds of things and which metrics can help you to accomplish those specific tasks.

First up, let's say I am doing a high level SERPs analysis, something like the keyword difficulty tool output report where it is trying to give me a sense of who is in the top 10, who is in the top 20. Why are they ranking there? Is it because they are an exact match domain? Do they have a lot of good anchor text? Do they have a ton of links into them? Is it because their domain is important or their page is important? We can look at a few key metrics. I like looking at page authority, which is that aggregate of all the mozMetrics and domain authority and then maybe the number of linking roots and C-blocks just to give me a rough idea of kind of what I am dealing with. That high level SERPs analysis is great when I am doing like a keyword difficulty report trying to determine which keywords to go after, whether it is roughly possible for me to be ranking in those sectors.

If I want to do some link quality analysis, so I am looking particularly at a link and trying to determine is this link helping me to rank? Is it potentially hurting me? If I am looking maybe at a client's website, say I was doing consulting or I am a new SEO in an in-house position and I am trying to analyze whether some links that were built previously are questionable or not, there are some really good ways to do that. One of my favorites is looking at PageRank versus mozRank and mozTrust.

Normally, what you should see is that PageRank and mozRank are pretty close. If PageRank is a 3 and mozRank is like a 4.5, it might be okay. It's a little on the border. If is a 3 and a 3.5, oh, that's, you know, that's perfectly fine. That's normal. We should expect that. If, however, I am looking at like a 3 and a mozRank is like a 5.8, something is fishy, right? Clearly, I mean, Google probably knows about more links than SEOmoz does and mozRank, boy, for it to be that high and PageRank to be that low, something might be up. Something might be going on where this site is selling links, Google has caught them, they are doing something manipulative. This could be a problem. Then I also like comparing mozTrust, because a lot of times, you won't see PR scores, especially for a lot of new sites and pages. Google hasn't gotten the data there, or they have an updated PR, but that site has built a lot of links in the meantime. By the way, you do want to be careful of that too when you are comparing PR and MR. But mozRank and mozTrust, if I see like a 5.8 and a 7.2, this is probably a phenomenal link. If I see a 5.8 and a 2.2, that's really, that's a bad sign. That usually means that this page, this site or this page has gotten a lot of links, but from a lot of very questionable sources. Otherwise, their mozTrust should be quite a bit higher.

So, those types of analyses along with looking at not just the number of links but the number of external versus internal links, if it's a lot of internal links, maybe that is boosting up the ranking, but it will be easier to overcome than a high number of external links and followed/no-followed. If it is a lot of no-followed links coming to the site, oh that is a different story than if all the links are followed.

Now, if I am looking at outreach and popularity, I am trying to say, how popular is this blog? How important is this news website? How big and popular on the Web do I think this forum is or Q&A site or community? Then, I want to be looking at some of those high level metrics, but I might want to dive sort of one step deeper and look at, yes, domain authority. I really care about domain metrics here, right? Not individual pages on those sites. So, I am looking at Domain mozRank and Domain mozTrust, which are the same thing as mozRank and mozTrust but on the domain wide level, and then I might care a lot about the linking roots and C-blocks, because that tells me a raw popularity count. How many people on the Web have referenced this guy compared to other people?

Now, if I am looking and trying to sort by the most helpful links to raise my ranking, say I am analyzing a set of 50 blogs and I want to decide, who am I going to guest blog for first? Who do I really think is going to be providing that value? Or I have the opportunity to sponsor or speak at a conference or contribute in some way, and I know that I can contribute the content or whatever I need to, to get those links. I really care a little bit less about the metrics and a few about these big three questions. So, I would ask you before you look at the metrics to ask yourselves these three questions, particularly if you are doing that sort of detail level analysis.

Number one, how well does that page or that site rank? If you search for a few keywords that are in the title tag of this particular page or the homepage of the site and it does not come up in the number one or number two positions, that might not be a good sign. If you search for four or five keywords that compose a phrase in the title and it is still not coming up, something is seriously wrong there. There might be some issue with that site in Google.

How relevant and useful is it? Is this site going to send actual traffic? Was the link editorially given? Is it a true citation that represents an endorsement from one site, one page to another? If that is not the case, you might be in trouble in the future. Even if Google hasn't caught it yet, Bing hasn't caught it yet, in the future, that might be causing problems. It is just not worth it. Go spend your time on other links that are editorial, sincere citations.

Do the sites and pages it links to rank well? This is a great way to analyze directories or link lists or those kinds of things and say, oh, this looks highly relevant. It is a pretty good site. If the pages that it is linking to don't rank well for their keywords, that's a bad sign. If a few of them don't, okay maybe, you know, everybody links to a few bad apples. But if a lot of them are not ranking well, something is going on there, right?

Next, I might look at some metrics like mozRank versus PageRank as we did above, mozRank versus mozTrust, the number of links and linking root domains just to get a sense of these. But those three questions, more so than any metric, are going to really answer the question of how helpful will this particular page or site be in raising my rankings if I get a link from them. Next, second to last here, is sorting of links. So if I want to do a rough or a raw sort, I have a bunch of links that I exported from Google, that I exported from a tool that ran that analyzed a bunch of pages and figured out whether there was usefulness. Maybe I used the ? in SEOmoz Labs there is that great tool to help me find all the search queries that I could use to find potential links. I think it is the, what is that called? I think it is the Link Acquisition Assistant. So, the Link Acquisition Assistant might export a bunch of raw lists of pages, and if I want to do some just raw sorting to get a general sense of importance before I start asking these questions, PA/DA are really good for that and so is number of linking roots. So inside the web app, you will see a lot of these. We tend to show at least those three metrics on most everything so you can do a rough sort.

Finally, last but not least, if I am doing a deep SERPs analysis, where I really want to know why does this particular page, why does this particular site rank where it does? Why is this 3 and this 2 and this 4? I want every metric I can get my hands on. The reason is because when you analyze these things all together in Excel, you can see weak points, strong points. You can get a sense of what Google is using or Bing is using in that particular grouping or algorithmic result to try to determine who should rank higher and lower, and that will give you a great sense of what you might need to do to accomplish those rankings.

All right everyone, I hope that this two part Whiteboard Friday extravaganza has been great for you. I look forward to the comments on the blog. Take care.

Google has released a major ranking algorithm update

Google has announced that they made a major change in their ranking algorithm:

"We launched a pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking [...] This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites?sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful.

At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites?sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on."

This is an addition to the scraper spam update that Google released earlier this month.

This is a noticeable update that affects about 12% of all queries and the search result pages can change a lot:

"We can?t make a major improvement without affecting rankings for many sites. It has to be that some sites will go up and some will go down. [...] It is important for high-quality sites to be rewarded, and that?s exactly what this change does."

Value of Empowerment

Yeah, It?s been a long time since I post a blog. I was discussing about the ?Empowerment? with my team folks during a Team Lunch last week. I thought this topic deserved a blog and hence this post :)
value of empowerment
What Empowerment is all about?

It?s a bit challenging to jot down what empowerment is all about. However, if we put together in a very simple way: ? To Operate by itself and with great enthusiasm!?

It?s taking responsibility and ownership. Empowerment is working independently towards a common objective. More of an earned privilege. It?s not a given right

Let?s see the 10 simple ways to empowerment

  1. Tell people what their responsibilities are
  2. Give them authority equal to their responsibilities
  3. Set standards of excellence
  4. Create the environment for ownership where each person wants to be responsible
  5. Give them knowledge and information
  6. Provide feedback on performance
  7. Recognize them for their achievements
  8. Trust them
  9. Give them permission to fail
  10. Treat them with dignity and respect

See what Bill Gate?s say on empowerment:

There?s a basic philosophy here that by empowering?workers you?ll make their jobs far more interesting, and they?ll be able to work at a higher level than they would have without all that information just a few clicks away.

I give special credits to Mr Anand Nataraj, CEO who has been my inspiration to resume my blog post. I?ll meet you in another interesting blog.

Cheers!!

Google Art Project

Last week, Google unveiled its latest pet project: Google Art Project. It appears that the search-engine giant is not only documenting the world website by website and street by street (with Google Maps), but it?s now documenting the world?s best art.

So far, Google has extensively photographed 17 galleries around the world using Google Map?s Street View technology to give visitors a virtual tour of the most beloved art galleries. Google Art Project enables visitors to browse the galleries as if they were actually there?virtually strolling the museums? wings. State-of-the-art technology enables people to zoom in on the works of art and experience a level of detail that can?t be appreciated in person. You can even step outside the museum and roam the surrounding area or create your own art collection to share with family and friends.

Whether you want to take a sneak peak at a museum you?re planning to visit soon (hello, Versailles) or want to stroll down memory lane and wander the halls of one of your all-time favorites, Google Art Project won?t disappoint.

Social Media Strategy: Contests, Giveaways & Sweepstakes

Everyone seems to be scrambling to utilize social media in any way they can. High levels of engagement are what it takes to successfully market your company?s presence within the various social media platforms. However, engagement can?t happen without having fans and followers to engage with. One extremely popular method of encouraging engagement is hosting giveaways. Brands of all sizes have been participating in giveaways and contests to increase their audiences and in most cases do so quite successfully. Primarily brands have stuck with Twitter and Facebook for these promotions, while others have experimented with foursquare, YouTube and other channels ready to feature promotions.

What are the different types of social media giveaways and what conversions are the marketers behind these sweepstakes trying to achieve? Today I?ll try my darnedest to explore both questions.

Types of Giveaways

1. Everyone Gets Free Stuff
The is the most common form of social media giveaway seen on Facebook and Twitter. Many brands host a deal where fans simply like a Facebook Page or follow a specific Twitter account and are given something for free after doing so. Not every company can afford to give every person who begins following their account something in return, but when you?re a big name brand it?s certainly the way to go. Facebook promotion guidelines changed as of December 2010, so it?s against their terms of service now to have a giveaway where the user only has to like the page to be entered. The guidelines now require users to enter more information as official entrance into the contest.

Example: Bruegger?s Facebook Promotion

Brueggers Bagels

Bruegger?s Bagels is currently running a promotion of this nature on Facebook, giving all fans that like their page access to a coupon worth 3 free bagels on February 8th. What a great idea to encourage word of mouth about the Bruegger?s brand and not to mention an awesome chance to snag some free bagels! Currently 123,245 people like this page but that is bound to go up with the quick spread of content on Facebook and the option right below the coupon to share this with family and friends.

The conversion for Bruegger?s with this promotion is getting more likes on Facebook. By making the offer extremely easy to complete, announcing the offer throughout their marketing channels (on their website, on Twitter and elsewhere) and giving something of value to the consumer, Bruegger?s is utilizing this form of giveaway very successfully. More likes on Facebook equals higher levels of engagement, which will hopefully bring heightened brand awareness and profit for Bruegger?s.

2. Many Enter, But Not Everyone Wins
Some giveaways are more costly than others, requiring an organization to offer prizes to only a select group of winners. This type of giveaway is also used when running longer promotions. If the Bruegger?s giveaway were running until June instead of February, they might not have had the ability to offer the coupon to everyone for that extended period of time without incurring major costs (possibly outweighing the benefits of gaining larger social networks). Giving away products to a limited amount of contestants over a longer period of time adds an element of surprise that often excites the winning user to discuss their prize and astonishment on their social network.

Example: Troy Polamalu?s Facebook/Twitter Promotion

Steelers

Troy Polamalu plays the strong safety position for the Pittsburgh Steelers and as a football player, he really has his foot in the door when it comes to social media. With active accounts on both Facebook and Twitter, Polamalu as a brand has begun a Steeler tickets giveaway to help both spread awareness of TwitChange and to gain more followers within his networks.

By requiring users to follow @twitchange, @OOIAL and @tpolamalu and tweet this specific message: I might win #TroyTickets to the AFC Title game because I follow @tpolamalu @ooial and @twitchange Details at http://bit.ly/gF66N7 users must join his network, while also sharing the information with other users within their network. This sends awareness of the giveaway much further than if it merely required users to follow Polamalu?s account on Twitter without tweeting about it. The AFC Championship tickets are not a cheap or easy to come by commodity, which makes the promotion limited to a few recipients and seem more high stakes.

This promotion also features a Facebook component which helps extends the audience it can reach, while making it consistent on all marketing channels. It?s hard to get users to copy and paste specific text for posting because let?s face it, people are lazy. This is one reason why giveaways that have simple instructions tend to have higher conversion rates overall. Because of the high profile prize and the fact that this contest benefits charity, many users have and will go the extra mile to enter the contest. Would people go the extra step for free bagels or free ice cream, maybe?

3. Free Content, Once You Connect
Many companies run a sweepstakes once a quarter or once a year due to the fact that contests lose their edge if they are continually running year-round, not to mention the constant flow of money a never-ending contest requires. Instead of running a giveaway many Facebook pages choose to run fan-exclusive content, which is obviously only available to existing fans of the Facebook Page. Whether it be exclusive industry tips, articles, access to coupons or any other content limited to fans who connect with your channel, it?s another way to encourage engagement and do so with limited or no cost to your company.

Example: LunaMetrics? Fan-only Facebook Content

LunaMetrics

Here at LunaMetrics we utilize our Facebook page to a variety of audiences within our industry. In an effort to encourage engagement and increase our connections within the industry, we?ve developed a fan-only content tab that is exclusive to fans who like our page. Once a fan likes our page we provide weekly tips and tricks related to Search Engine Optimization and Google Analytics on our fan-only tab. These helpful insights allow us to share our expertise in our industry, while receiving more fans and expanding our network within this particular platform.
