8 Open Positions at SEOmoz, Just Named Seattle's #6 Best Place to Work

[fivefilters.org: unable to retrieve full-text content]

Posted by randfish

Out of the many recent accomplishments that we've had, perhaps none is more exciting than the recent publicity we received from being named in Seattle's Top 10 Places to Work by Seattle Met Magazine:

Seattle Met: Best Places to Work
What do rubber band balls, coffee, cupcakes & a workspace w/ no computer have in common? The cover of this month's Seattle Met magazine!

But, magazine articles aren't the only things that should entice you to join our ragtag bunch...

Our Office

When you step foot inside SEOmoz, you'll be forced to breakdance... Well, OK, that's only if you mindlessly obey floor diagrams. You will, however, find a space that's fun, productive, light-filled and only a block away from the Pike Place Market. We have pretty cool meeting rooms, too.

Lots of windows help keep the gloomy Seattle weather from damaging our sun-starved bodies

Xbox Kinect on Friday Nights

Our Team

The 34 people who work at the MozPlex are absolutely amazing. I noted in the Seattle Met piece that we bias toward folks who are not only smart and capable, but fit our culture of TAGFEE. That's resulted in a group that I'm proud to call co-workers and friends.

Cyrus + Jen from Marketing, Chas from Engineering + Miranda from Product

If you've met Moz team members at events or interacted with us over the web or phone, you've probably already been impressed. If you haven't... you should apply for an interview at one of the positions below just to come to say Hi! :-) (OK, probably not really, but you should at least come to our NYC meetup May 12, the Distilled Boston conference or MozCon this summer).

Our Mission: Simplify Organic Web Marketing

We're privileged to tackle a huge, meaningful problem in a massive market. It's our goal to take what is today a massive, complex set of tasks + challenges and make them accessible to non-experts, trackable via solid data and provide recommendations + automation to make improvement easy.

Inbound Marketing

This stuff is really hard. We're building software to make it less so. If that's something you're passionate about, we think there's no better place to be.

Our Customers + Community: More than a million strong!

In March, SEOmoz + OSE had its first ever combined 1million+ visit month:

SEOmoz's Traffic in March 2011

Open Site Explorer March Traffic

As if you needed another reason not to trust Alexa, Compete, Quantcast, etc. :-)

Over the years, millions of people have used our tools + resources to learn more about search/web marketing and improve their sites. Our market position is an exciting one, filled with opportunity, but we know that great responsibility comes with that privilege. One of the best things we can offer to prospective employees is the chance to have a big impact on an emerging field - it's the same thing that makes me excited to come to the office (or hop on a plane) every morning.

We're Hiring Eight Exceptional People!

In addition to our ongoing search for world-class software engineers, I’m thrilled to announce eight new positions on the Moz team:

SEOmoz wants people who believe in our mission and in TAGFEE. We’re unique in focusing not only on great talent, but great fit with our team. If you read the blog regularly or have stumbled across a few posts from us and feel a kindred spirit, we'd really love to talk. If you're new to SEOmoz but curious to learn more, we are too and we hope you'll take that first step by clicking and applying to one of the positions below:

Awesome Job #1: Marketing Oracle (aka Quality Content Honcho)

Producing exceptional content has been the foundation of our strategy since the beginning. We're looking for someone to produce extraordinary content for us and manage our entire content production process (the blog, news, guides, videos, and lots more). Whether it's original research, data analysis, or thought leadership in the inbound marketing space, we're looking for someone who can become our best blogger and produce our most linked-to content. You should have a proven track record of producing quality, engaging content for social media audiences, experience and knowledge of all forms of inbound marketing, and the ability to see where things are headed (i.e. be a marketing oracle).

Quality content is of the utmost importance to us, and you must share this obsession. You should be able to distill complex ideas into simple ones, create visualizations and infographics of data sets, and have a deep-rooted desire to teach and communicate ideas online. You’re abreast of the latest industry news and able to quickly respond and communicate the implications to our community. This position is unlike any you'll find at other companies -- there are few formal requirements. If you're passionate about producing phenomenal content, then this job is for you!

Awesome Job #2: Online Marketer

We’re looking for an amazing online marketer. You know how to dominate paid marketing channels and are obsessed with managing them every day—making adjustments for daily performance gains, performing detailed analysis in Excel, and creating key performance indicators in Google Analytics. You’re obsessed with managing data to a positive ROI. You know how to take charge of new channels that aren’t even popular yet (Twitter Advertising, for example) or can learn how to very quickly. You make use of acronyms like PPC, CRO, CPA, CPM, CPC in daily conversation. You don’t just know these acronyms, you have years of practical experience working with them.

When it comes to performance marketing, you believe in a data-driven culture and the power of ongoing testing. If you like getting creative on a daily basis, testing new marketing waters, and collaborating with other passionate marketers, then this position is all you. But most of all, you really want to work for the awesome and talented Joanna Lord.

Awesome Job #3: Systems Administrator

To be a Mozzer System Administrator, you should be a Mac ninja and Google Apps whiz, have a good sense of humor, and have The Office Tivo’d. You have a desire to work with a bunch of technology rockstars who are passionate about developing stellar Internet marketing software. You often find yourself daydreaming about networking, development support, and production support. People often catch you using words like Cisco, MySql, and Samba constantly. You’ll provide desktop support for over thirty MozStaff and those to come in our rapidly growing office. We would love for you to work with and support the development team from prototype to staging to production; providing systems resources, setup, and monitoring.

You should know administration of Macs and some Windows and Linux systems, network administration including Cisco ASA with VPN, wireless networking, and Google Apps for your domain. Joining SEOmoz would a great opportunity to learn new technology and show your skills by enhancing what is already in place. We run part of our systems in the cloud, part hosted, and development is virtualized—so, you’ll spend part of your day on the ground (managing our office’s computers), and part of your day managing our cloud systems—we won’t be upset if your head is up in the clouds.

Awesome Job #4: Graphic Designer (Web UX/UI)

We’re looking for a web designer with the ability to create mind-lasers with his/her design talents and destroy web zombies with his/her Photoshop cannon abilities. Swoosh. Explosion. If you have the ability to liquefy rainbows and concentrate their pantones into web-safe colors, we want you! You’ll participate in site discussions, information gathering, team brainstorms, critiques, and presentations with the product team and marketing team. Daily tasks center on a comprehensive understanding of the design vision of SEOmoz, leading to the creation of new visual assets, concepts and the production of a full suite of site material and interface components. This role will also be involved with periodic maintenance of current site design material.

You should be a solid communicator (iambic pentameter optional), actively seeking and spreading inspiration, regularly challenging the status quo of our current designs, and curiously seeking out and learning about new tools and design trends. Did we mention you should have mad Photoshop and Illustrator skills, like pie, and wear Threadless t-shirts? Those who do not love tightly-kerned Helvetica Bold need not apply, or have a good reason not to. ;-)

Awesome Job #5: Customer Service Expert

Do you <3 the Internet, love helping people, and laugh easily and often? Do your friends call you when their computers barf up strange error messages? Does Search Engine Optimization fascinate you? Are you unafraid of the early morning—or love making copious amounts of coffee? If this sounds like you, then we should chat. As a Customer Service Expert on our morning shift (6:30am to 3:30pm), you will contribute to the team by assisting our customers with all of their SEOmoz site and billing problems.

This includes the technical problems they encounter using our site and tools, and the billing questions they have about their accounts. You'll diagnose problems and provide helpful advice across several different platforms: Firefox, Chrome, Safari, IE, Windows and Macs. By understanding our customers’ needs and working closely with the product and marketing teams, you will help us build high quality, delightful products.

Awesome Job #6: Community Attaché

Our community is one of the most vibrant on the net. The Community Attaché, along with Jen Lopez, our Chief Community Wrangler, will connect, develop and nurture that community. Seriously, you want to have our community over for a sleep over. One of your primary responsibilities will be managing the day-to-day operations of our PRO Q&A Forum—you should be excited about increasing participation, quality and functionality. You’ll ensure questions are answered quickly, and that great answers are rewarded and recognized. You don’t mind rolling up your sleeves and reviewing dozens of questions daily. You’ll connect weekly with lots of community members and develop and manage a team of associates and moderators who will help you keep things running smoothly.

You’re passionate about user-generated content and will encouraging participation in YOUmoz (our user-generated blog), walk new authors through the process, help edit submitted posts, and publish and promote finished content. You love SEO and social media and should have experience with both. Most importantly, you aren’t afraid working with a wonderfully diverse set of people (including some very occasionally grumpy ones) who are passionate about online marketing and SEO. You must also enjoy giving and receiving hugs. ;-)

Apply for this job or refer a friend

Awesome Job #7: Business Development (Chief Friendmaker, API Guru)

You like to create things, whether that’s partnerships, creative new uses for our API, or lasting friendships with SEOmoz customers. Maybe you’ve worn a suit in the past and want to work somewhere where shorts and a t-shirt are typical attire. You’ve got technical chops and are able to devise creative ways for others to use our data. You want to create new distribution partnerships that develop new marketing channels for SEOmoz PRO. You should have experience and knowledge with the SEO industry—you’ll be helping large agency and enterprise customers adopt our software. You’ll also be the primary point of contact for our API customers and always be on the lookout for new opportunities. You’ll feed new technology ideas to our product team who will make those ideas a reality. You’ll foster a community of API developers and host developer hack days.

You should have business development experience but not be afraid of a company that encourages honesty and informality in business dealings—we prefer friendships to partnerships. You should also be a super-friendly person that people love to spend time with—big plus if you can do a cartwheel, know how to make friendship bracelets, or love talking partnerships over Happy Hour.

Why You Should Work Here in One Photo:

So, if all this seems interesting, we'd love to chat with you, and if you know one someone who'd be a good fit for any of these positions, please send them our way; there's a nifty "Send JobVite" link on each jobs page that lets you share a position via Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.  We'll always keep our careers page updated with the latest positions at www.seomoz.org/about/jobs. Oh, and we’re definitely an equal opportunity employer.

p.s. We do offer re-location packages and assistance, but we can only accept folks who can legally live/work in the US (much as we'd love to make more international hires, navigating the US visa system is, as yet, beyond our means).

What Makes a Good SEO Client

Written on July 22, 2010 ? 3:48 pm | by Shell Harris |

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

good-seo-client

What Makes a Good SEO Client?

This is the flip side of the question many clients have to answer, ?What makes a good SEO company to do business with??, however; successful implementation of any SEO strategy is based on a partnership between SEO Company and client. Not only do you need a good SEO consultant but also a good SEO client, so what qualities should you see in such a good SEO client?

Trust in the SEO Company and their SEO Advice

Clients who have embarked on an ecommerce strategy have already recognized the potential of the web for their business. There is much that is different from the real world, however some basic precepts are the same no matter who you are or what you are doing. Trust is one of them, and after selecting an SEO partner the client must be able to trust what the SEO practitioner is advising and helping the client to implement for their web strategy.

Availability and Responsiveness

A good SEO client is responsive to requests and performs their part in maintaining good lines of open communication, not only between the principal or senior management, but also the webmaster or whoever is responsible for implementing content and coding changes on the website.

Being available by email or telephone is symptomatic of a good partnership, which is essential when changes need to be made quickly to react to the web developments and search engine algorithm changes.

Questioning and Understanding

A good SEO client values the experience and expertise a good SEO practitioner brings to the business mix, however it is important the client is able to understand what is happening. This means asking questions and seeking clarification of the SEO strategies being propounded and implemented. The adage that the only stupid question is the one that doesn?t get asked certainly applies here!

The SEO Partnership

Developing and implementing a successful SEO strategy requires that a good partnership develops between client and practitioner. The client understands their business and the business environment they operate in far better than the SEO practitioner will do, and the SEO strategy needs to be closely tailored to suit the client?s business. Strong interaction between client and practitioner is needed, especially when it comes to developing and adding content, ensuring relevant updates and information is provided and who to seek links from.

Payment

The advice people tend to follow most is the advice that they pay for! The same is true for SEO, and SEO consultants rely on a steady stream of happy clients paying their bills. This may seem like an obvious statement, but a good SEO client is one who understands what they are buying and is happy to write the check for the SEO Company?s invoice each month.

SEO is a Reiterative Process: Look at the Results

SEO is a process rather than a project: it requires a continuous review of the results to see what the impact of SEO strategies is, but also a thorough analysis of how the results are achieved. It is not simply the rankings which need to be reviewed and monitored, but where the traffic is coming from, user behavior when on the site, monitoring site navigation and engaging in relevant site testing in order to understand what is working well in persuading a visitor to convert to a paying customer.

What makes a good SEO client is a client who appreciates the holistic nature of SEO work and the skills and experience of the practitioner. A good SEO client will contribute enormously to the success of the web strategies advised by the SEO practitioner, in fact, it is unlikely there will be much success without a good SEO client.

New Online Coupon for Retailers and CPGs Helps Justify Online Media Spends

As a marketing vehicle, coupons have long-attracted CPG and retail companies. Certainly, they?re a way to stimulate sales and fend off competition. Replicating the traditional print coupon in an online environment has not been easy for CPGs and retailers, however. The process has been wrought with problems like counterfeiting and fraud, software, and site integration complexities, and, as anyone in shopper marketing will tell you about any coupon, getting a complete handle on shopper data is either impossible or very expensive. Until now.

A New Kind of Coupon

Enter Coupon Factory, a digital couponing and promotions engine conceived specifically with the retail or CPG?s own site in mind. The idea for Coupon Factory?s easy solution came from common pains expressed by several retail customers of its developer, Rockfish Interactive:

  • It took too long for other printable online coupon solutions to be implemented
  • Other coupon solutions came with all kinds of bad user experience challenges like software conflicts (anti-viruses, firewalls) that often meant they didn?t even work for the customer 100 percent of the time
  • The retailers or CPGs never got any data?or had to pay a lot for it
  • There was no way to measure the campaign performance in real time and therefore no way to adjust the offer quickly enough if it wasn?t delivering strong enough results.

In an attempt to solve this problem, Rockfish went to work and after a year of beta testing with a handful of large retailers and CPGs like White Cloud, Pepperidge Farms, and SC Johnson, the company felt confident to launch the Coupon Factory solution on a wide scale.

A Widget-Based Platform

Run through a widget that mimics an on-site ad, Coupon Factory?s technology only requires the site owner to copy and paste basic code into a web page, really revolutionizing and simplifying the online printable coupon process. Instead of waiting days or weeks to have an online coupon program generated and activated on their site (or on microsites, affiliates, or on in-store kiosks), companies can now have an offer up and running in minutes. All the marketer has to do is create an account in the Coupon Factory dashboard, complete a few fields that define the coupon components, upload creative brand assets and UPC codes, choose distribution options and geographical limitations, and they?re off!

couponfactory-widget

couponfactory-coupon

Coupon Factory?s widget-based platform has other valuable features such as built-in social media sharing and fraud protections such as unique identifier numbers printed on each coupon and total or by-user print limitations (since the entire coupon generation is server-side, no coupon is ever presented in its full digital format, only print-to-page).

Analytics and Other Features

One of Coupon Factory?s most appealing features for marketers is its built-in real-time analytics, also housed in the tool?s dashboard. It tracks offer (widget/ad) impressions, clicks, and prints. If retailers can pass back their redemption data via batch file or API access, Coupon Factory can add that information into the dashboard analytics as well. It?s also currently in talks with a third-party clearinghouse that handles CPG coupon redemption data to be able to give marketers access to and view this information in the system too.

Using Coupon Factory?s system is surprisingly affordable. There are no set-up fees and no monthly fees. For ?enterprise? accounts, there?s a $500 one-time activation fee and then a per-print charge ranging from four to nine cents depending upon volume. Coupon Factory also appeals to agencies (there is a white-labeled version) and publishers, since the entire interaction is done directly on their site.

Up next, by summer Coupon Factory wants to use a mobile app it?s created to give local small businesses a means to promote coupons too. Coupon Factory does think this kind of solution would compete against Groupon-like platforms, but it believes that small businesses cannot profitably sustain the deep discounting required by deal sites and it wants to fill the void with a different kind of means to deliver customers.

Pretty appealing, huh?

Say Good Bye to Google Video?

Google Videos is the most prominent video promoting site which will be shut down by April 29, 2011 according to the Googlestatement. Yup, Google videos will be no more from this date. Though it was a big disappointment between users Google saysit?s,

?working to automatically migrate your Google Videos to YouTube.? In the meantime, Google?s added an ?Upload Videos toYouTube? option, making it easy to send videos from a Google Video account to an associated YouTube account. We?ve created an?Upload Videos to YouTube? option on the Google Video status page. To do this, you?ll need to have a YouTube accountassociated with your Google Video account (you can create one here). Before doing this you should read YouTube?s Terms of Useand Copyright Policies. If you choose this option, we?ll do our best to ensure your existing Google Video links continue tofunction. If you?d prefer to download your videos from Google Video, that option is still available.

As we said nearly two years ago, the team is now focused on tackling the tough challenge of video search. We want to thankthe millions of people around the world who have taken the time to create and share videos on Google Video. We hope today?simprovements will help ease your transition to another video hosting service.

Thank you for being a Google Video user.

So, if any user had uploaded their videos in Google videos you can migrate your videos to YouTube easily now and proceed yourprocessing from there itself if you have account on it.

Can MySpace Stop the Rot?

March 28th, 2011 by John

It wasn?t supposed to be like this! MySpace?s redesign was supposed to herald the dawn of a new era for one of the world?s first and most popular social networking sites ? instead, figures released by comScore show that MySpace is haemorrhaging unique users. In fact, between January and February of this year over 10 million uniques have deserted MySpace. MySpace has also announced that it has to shed staff worldwide ? things aren?t looking so good for MySpace as the years roll on?

Approximately half of its staff globally are being cut ? a real fall from grace as it used to be the one and only place on the internet for new artists to launch their music careers. It?s looking less likely though that those heights will ever be hit again as people desert MySpace on a year-by-year basis. Almost 50 million are leaving the site annually ? that figure may be even higher this year if 10 million people have already left in the first two months of 2011.

MySpace continues to lose uniques on a monthly basis

MySpace was, of course, bought out by News Corp in 2005 for a grand total of 330 million. Today?s valuation of MySpace would no doubt be much much lower. And the reality of it is that it?s no surprise as MySpace has failed to capitalise on its social position, and has been overtaken by social behemoths such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

MySpace?s problems are that it is now purely an entertainment destination, and that it decided to stay in the music niche it carved out for itself all those years ago. MySpace still attracts a huge amount of organic users, and though that number is receding on an almost daily basis, all is not lost. But is there anyone at News Corp with a vision clear and ambitious enough to turn MySpace around?

The Keyword Detox: How to Refocus Keyword Research to look for Gaps and Opportunities

Several days ago, I was asked to review a list of keywords for a site and created a nice little layout to provide gaps and opportunities for established keywords. Everyone thought it was nifty, here it is so that you can benefit, too.
Beet Header for Keyword Gaps and Opportunities

Our Problem: Bob?s Beets.

Let?s say you?ll be reviewing a site about beets. Bob, the owner of Bob?s Beets, has a pretty nice layout of keywords. He had a previous SEO campaign done, but it?s been awhile and he really wants to make sure his website is doing as well as it could. Pretty cut and dry. Before you run off and get excited across the interwebs finding new keywords to throw at Bob and his beet goodness, you should fire up Excel. As you can see I like to open up with some basic things such as URL, Keywords, both national and local ranking, keyword difficulty, and exact match search volume.

First Image for Keyword Gaps and Opportunities

Make Color Coding your Friend

I need everyone to know first that I love color coding things (see the start above). I find it easier if you can quickly scroll through huge Excel sheets and find highlighted problems with ease. You can go with any color you decide. I went with a manly pastel blue. For the sake of me writing less we are going to assume that Bob kept around a handy dandy list of previous targeted keywords, title, and Meta descriptions. Bob is a really awesome client.

Break up the Excel file by URL and subfolder

So we?ll break up each page and their subsections, in order, down through the keyword list. I like to break up each section with a color line for easier viewing. I include a short description of the page followed by the title for a header. This helps as a nice reference when looking at the ranking for the keywords selected for each specific page. Below is a sampling of the initial process to give you a general idea.

Second Image for Keyword Gaps and Opportunties

Think about difficulty and volume before rank

Once I?ve filled the fields to cover your desired area of the site, I tend to skip over ranking into grabbing data for the difficulty and search volume for each keyword. Why did I decide to jump over ranking? I find it much easier to look at the competitive field for specific keywords coupled with search volume, which will help to highlight specific keywords out of each section. I focus on the keywords that
1. I feel the site could compete for based on difficulty and
2. Have enough traffic to be worth working on.

Tools to help you find these gaps

There are several ways you can aggregate data to come up with a difficulty model for each keyword, I highly suggest trying out SEOmoz Pro Tools specifically for their keyword difficulty tool. If you?re not ready to commit to a paid tool set, I still suggest grabbing SEOmoz?s free SEO Toolbar which calculates a read out of each sites Page Authority and Domain Authority. If you wish to go the toolbar route it will be much more time intensive (albeit free), as you will have to physically visit each of the top 10 ranking sites for each keyword. Record each Page Authority and Domain Authority, add the numbers up and divide by two and multiply by .10 to receive a baseline difficulty score. You can use a number of tools for volume search such as WordTracker; pick one you?re most comfortable with.

Third Image detailing Keyword Gaps and Opportunties

As you can see from the above graph above, I?ve been able to find a sampling from my, totally made up, results. I use purple to distinguish a potential opportunity but with a higher competition for ranking; orange denotes a perfect blend of medium competition and high enough search traffic. The easiest way to find these opportunities is to use the sort feature for the volume row and cross reference that with the difficulty row. From there I check to see where each keyword ranks. If you?re pressed for time you could focus only on the highlighted words, but I suggest filling everything out to provide a fuller picture of the site?s performance.

Fourth Image for Keyword Gaps and Opportuntites

Looking at the finished example sheet there are several areas Bob?s keywords are severely behind in the SERP?s. Ouch. Still, by providing this data, we can really dig into these areas and go over what is wrong to correct these problems. Bob could definitely do better for beet cake, beet lover, and beet juice. Personally, I would focus on the faltering areas in the orange and think about more intensive strategies for trying to enter a purple zone. I realize that organizing a sheet like this may be inconvenient for some, but this provides a quick numerical guide of how your site is performing in relation to your targeted keywords, which I think is invaluable. Let me know if you have a different way or suggestions for the improvement of my methods in the comments below.

Hey Jordan, thanks for the description and spreadsheet setup!

Here?s a dumb question: When you write about distinguishing ?Rank (National)? from ?Rank (Local)?, what method are you using to arrive at the ?Rank (Local)?? Does that amount to, e.g., logging into Google, then performing the searches to see how the results work for your current location?

Hey Winooski,

Thanks for the comment! No question is dumb. You are correct that I manually search through Google for the local terms. I suggest using the &pws=0 at the end of the search URL if you are logged into Google. It may be slightly more time intensive to manually search, but I feel the data you collect is much more robust.
